Bitter News, 4-14-10

Headlines from the Bitter Newsroom that blissfully overlooked National Be Kind to Lawyers Day:

• Age is just a number…that matters.  You can quote Jay-Z feat. Mr. Hudson all you want (and if you’re old, you won’t get that reference), but none of us are Forever Young.  And Ashby Jones hits us square between the cataracts eyes today with two age-related issues: 1) Some states are mulling a mandatory step-down age of 70 for judges [here]; 2) Steve Cohen is a 58-year-old 1L at at New York Law School who can’t understand why 20-something law students don’t sip sherry at happy hour [here].  [WSJ Law Blog: Judges | 58L]

• Two Ninja law tales

In two weeks is Crazytown

But list anyway

Last week, we had net neutrality ninja.  This week, two haikus for a blind ninja lawyer!  Sort of.  [io9]

• A lawyer is credited as being “principally responsible” for getting a stolen Leonardo da Vinci back to its owner.  Thomas Crown, JD—sans Rene Russo circa ‘99.  [BBC News]

• Like finding a yeti, a law firm has been discovered where 53% of the partners are lady lawyers (compared to 19% nationally).  But for every happy share-holder female law partner who’s a part-time worker, there’s a “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Pregnancy” situation.  [WCCO.com]

• The new U.S. News & World Report law school rankings got leaked early AGAIN.  What else is new?  Well, if you’re Hofstra or NYU, quite a bit.  Take a look at what might (or might not) be the new official standings for 2010.  (Looks like our friends at USC don’t have much to comment on.  Steady Eddie at 18.) [Above the Law]

• Attention ladies: Homeowners insurance doesn’t cover you in the event of a Tiger attack.  And we’re talking about the Siberian kind and not the golfing kind.  Though, if you’re cute enough, both include mauling.  [Legal Blog Watch]

• Move over John Yoo, a new controversial law professor is hitting California.  Recently released from prison, Bill Lerach may soon be teaching at The University of California, Irvine School of Law.  Admit it, “Regulation of Free Market Capitalism” taught by an ex-con sounds pretty cool.  [The Am Law Daily]

• Justice Breyer has some advice for Obama’s new SCOTUS nominee: Don’t get cute or clever.  Capiche? [Associated Press]

• The Chicago Bar Association held a “What Not to Wear” fashion show last week.  “According to this panel of legal eagles, female lawyers should avoid buying suits at Express, exposing bra straps or bending over at the pastry table, lest you expose a “tramp stamp” in the middle of your cheese-filled danish-eating.” Hmm, we’ve seen this pastry-table bending over before and it does lead to trouble, yes?  Ahh, well, at least it did for Nick (below).  [Styleite]
