Bitter News, 9-25-09

Headlines from the Bitter Newsroom or celebrity baby name or computer virus—you decide:

• Six-foot-five, 295-pound Harvard senior offensive tackle James Williams had plans to graduate and enter law school.  Then that annoying organization of actual dream makers, the NFL, invited him to come join.  “A first-year attorney at a U.S. law firm will earn an average $125,000, according to the National Association for Law Placement, while a fifth-round NFL draft selection will average $500,000 next season, according to the NFL union.” And, just as a reminder, there is currently no website called BitterProFootballPlayer.com.  [Bloomberg]

• What’s in a name?  Well, if it’s the name of the institution that gave you your JD, it’s usually not named “law school” at all.  In a breakdown of the official names of the 199 ABA-accredited programs in the U.S., only 37 of them have “law school” as part of their name.  Tricky little bastards.  [LawSchool.com via TaxProf Blog]

• The one-day bomb of 2L job offers has been dropped by Skadden. 45 days until detonation countdown can commence.  [The Am Law Daily]

• RBG gave us a little scare yesterday when she was admitted to the hospital for an iron deficiency.  Remember: The SCOTUS justice has been a pancreatic cancer survivor since earlier this year.  But it seems like she ate her spinach because it looks like she’s made it through[WSJ Law Blog]

• “Love in the Time of Big Law” —don’t even care what it’s about—the titles just deserves a shout-out.  Because BigLaw and cholera are kind of the same thing.  [The Snark @ The Fulton County Daily Report]

• What type of lawyer would Girls Gone Wild founder Joe Francis most appreciate?  How about one called “Munger?” Ol’ legally complicated Joe is digging his new dream team.  [The Am Law Daily]

• Can we stop ragging on the Muslim headscarves already?  Last month we mentioned a a Detroit judge being sued for not allowing a woman to wear a headscarf in court.  Now “hyper-sexualized” retailer Abercrombie & Fitch is being sued for discrimination because they allegedly don’t hire women who have to cover their heads for religious reason.  Well, I guess if your religion requires you to wear a flirty, crushed-straw cowboy hat, that might eek by.  But who can split those hairs?  [Time via Yahoo!]

• “Paul G. Kirk Jr. is not only the trusted adviser of the Kennedy clan, but a quiet fixer with a reassuring demeanor.” That sounds eff-ing shady.  Kirk, a Harvard-educated lawyer and a son of a former state Supreme Judicial Court justice, will temporarily replace the late Sen. Kennedy.  [Boston.com]

• Those damn bed bugs.  If they’re not nipping at lawyer on the west coast, their infecting John Jay College of Criminal Justice on the east coast.  The school has been shutting down entire buildings in attempt to contain the bb outbreak. [Cityroom @ NYT]

• What’s the burning smell?  It’s your iPhone on fire with all these hot, new, lawyer-friendly apps.  [ABA Journal]
