A federal judge in Brooklyn has sentenced former NBA referee, and self-avowed gambling addict, Tim Donaghy, to 15 months in prison for taking payoffs for inside tips on games. Donaghy could have received up to 33 months at his sentencing Tuesday. The Caesar’s Palace over/under betting line was 28 months.
The league has angrily denied Donaghy’s claim that corruption among referees runs deeper than one bad referee. Donaghy pleaded guilty last August to conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting betting information through interstate commerce.
According to sources, Donaghy was livid that he received such a short sentence—since he had placed a $10,000 “under” bet two weeks ago. [Fox Sports]
