Bitter Lawyer’s 10 Favorite Law Student Blogs
by Bitter Staff
04:54 AM, 09/24
In case you blinked, it’s fall already. And the re-migration of scared-to-death 1Ls, worked-to-death 2Ls and bored-to-death 3Ls back to campuses means a steady stream of back-to-school blogging. So, in honor of another year of lawyer factories churning out more lawyers than there are legal jobs, Bitter Lawyer is putting the spotlight on some of our favorite blogs / blawgs written by law students who we’d give an offer to—if they felt like just writing funny s#!t and defaulting on their loans following graduation.
After an inordinate amount of web surfing, blog roll sifting, reading and debating, we settled on what, we think, are the most entertaining, unique voices in the category. Since these bloggers spend most of their day competing for rank, we held off on crowing a winner and decided to present them as a collective “top 10,” so they’re listed in alphabetical order—with exception to #10, which is our favorite pre-law blog. (It’s the one day on Bitter Lawyer where everyone’s a winner.)
We wanted to present them on a somewhat-level playing field, so we asked them all the same series of questions. And it goes a little something like this…..

1. i don’t wear skinny jeans (Click here for site)
A (literally) bright, graphic display of thought, “a twenty-something guy trying to make it as an NYU law student from 0L to 3L” really shows you what he’s thinking.
Favorite post of the week: “If a 0L writes the LSAT, will 1Ls hear it?”
What’s a legal blog (other than yours) you can’t get enough of?
Other than Bitter Lawyer? Above the Law. It was my first. You never forget your first. Plus, David Lat gave a talk at NYU during orientation.
Complete this sentence: In a perfect law school, there would be…
…enough free time to sleep.
If a gunner came to you ten minutes before a final and gave you a sob story about losing his/her outline, would you show some mercy and give up a copy of yours?
Without question. This may be because I haven’t seen any gunners in my class, however. Some people like to ask questions more than others, but there haven’t been any ostentatious displays of intellectual fertility, yet.
What’s the dumbest thing you’ve heard in law school?
Buffalo wings aren’t made from buffalo?

2. laughing: with or at you (Click here for site)
Yet another female, cat-loving, 1L-mocking law student from a somewhere-in-the-middle school who shares our love for over-hyphenation.
Favorite post of the week: “advice (not assvice!) to 1Ls”
What’s a legal blog (other than yours) you can’t get enough of?
My favorite law student blog is Thanks, But No Thanks. It was the first law-related blog I started reading before I started law school and first getting into blog reading. I have a total friend-crush on Nobody.
Complete this sentence: In a perfect law school, there would be…
…no grades, no tuition, no douchebags, and lots of kittens and unicorns.
What’s been your worst moment in law school?
How about my most mortifying moment? Definitely last year in class when I told my professor, “You’re freaking me out, man!”
What’s the dumbest thing you’ve heard in law school?
I honestly couldn’t tell you. I tend to block those moments out by rolling my eyes so far up into my head that it actually obliterates any memory of the event.

3. Law Ingenue (Click here for site)
We’re a little turned on by a 37-year-old 3L Michigan diva who’s not afraid to give the death glare.
Favorite post of the week: ‘Weird Trip to the Library”
What’s a legal blog (other than yours) you can’t get enough of?
The Namby Pamby, Attorney-at-Law. I hope I still have a sense of humor when I finish law school!
Complete this sentence: In a perfect law school, there would be…
… a lot more concentration on the modern-day practice of law. I could care less how property law worked in 1785 England. I would rather know how to execute an inter vivos gift transfer of property that will hold up in court TODAY.
What’s been your best moment in law school?
Near the end of one term, I ended up in the hospital due to a health emergency. I told the doctor I couldn’t have surgery right away because I had a final paper due the following week.
When they released me, I was hocked up on medication and sweating profusely from the pain. I stayed up half the night typing out what I thought was the worst paper ever, including 42 of the most convoluted Bluebook footnotes ever conceived. Every ten minutes I had to sip ginger ale to prevent myself from vomiting all over my paper. I managed to turn it in with 20 minutes to spare. Three weeks later (after finally having surgery), the grades were released. I received an “A” and my first certificate of merit for having the highest grade in the class.
What’s been your worst moment in law school?
Getting my first “C” on an exam when I was sure I aced it. It felt like a kick in the stomach, but it was a great wake-up call to never be too cocky.
If a gunner came to you ten minutes before a final and gave you a sob story about losing his/her outline, would you show some mercy and give up a copy of yours?
It depends on if they were just “enthusiastic” in class, or if they were a person suffering from law school Tourettes syndrome who would continually shout out answers even when the professor wasn’t asking a question. If they were just enthusiastic, sure. If they were the halleluiah-save-my-law-school-soul type who liked to testify regularly, then they can just suffer!!! Mercy be damned.
What’s the dumbest thing you’ve heard in law school?
A student to a criminal procedure professor when asking for his advice: “What does it matter if I got a speeding ticket in this state? I live in another state!”
A student in her final term of law school to the judge teaching our class: “But you HAVE to help me find a job because I don’t have any money left, my student loans are coming due, and I have no way to pay rent next month.”

4. Law School Ninja (Click here for site)
There’s something distinctive about a ninja 1L chick at Ninja School of Law with a ninja attitude who throws her ninja stars at un-ninja-like Sarah Palin and ninja midgets.
Favorite post of the week: “law school lessons: week 4”
What’s a legal blog (other than yours) you can’t get enough of?
If I have to choose, I read Fearfully Optimistic as often as possible, along with i don’t wear skinny jeans, The Reasonably Prudent Law Student and Fresh Thought Soup. At least once a week, though, I read every single blawg that’s listed on my blawgroll because they’re all really great. If they weren’t, I wouldn’t list them.
Complete this sentence: In a perfect law school, there would be…
…a nap room (besides the carrel), a place for manis and pedis on campus and free energy drinks. I’m gonna go broke at the vending machine, I can already tell.
What’s been your best moment in law school?
I’m only three weeks in, but the best thing academically so far was the day that CivPro quit being so confusing and started making actual sense. Yay for light bulbs in my head!! Other than that, I’ve met some really, really fantastic and funny people, and I’m 100% positive that I’m making lifelong friends right now. That’s a great feeling.
What’s been your worst moment in law school?
Checking out mentally when I thought my turn was over in Contracts, only to realize a few moments later that I was still supposed to be on. It. Was. Ugly.

5. Legally Fabulous (Click here for site)
Sexy sorority girl fantasy child? High-maintenance shrew? Love? Love to hate? This 3L blond aspiring to be Elle Woods keeps us intrigued.
Favorite post of the week: “Teeny Tiny Tuesday”
What’s a legal blog (other than yours) you can’t get enough of?
The Namby Pamby, Attorney-at-Law and Daisy, JD.
Complete this sentence: In a perfect law school, there would be…
…no law students (other than myself, of course). Law students are serious losers. They all think they’re smarter, cooler, and better looking than they are. They also all think they’re going to make more money than they will. Newsflash: You’re all f*#king dorks. Get over yourselves. Oh, also, there would probably be no textbooks. They’re expensive, and I don’t read them anyway.
What’s been your best moment in law school?
Hmmm… When I hooked up with the cute boy from law school that I’d had a crush on for almost a year after an extremely drunken bar review? Ha.
What’s been your worst moment in law school?
Yeah, that would have to be when I saw that same boy in the library the following week. Awwwkwarrrd. Seriously, ya’ll, they don’t say “Don’t sh%t where you eat” for nothing. (And no, this didn’t happen as a 1L. As a 3L. I’m an asshole).
What’s the dumbest thing you’ve heard in law school?
Can I change this to “What’s the last thing you heard in law school that wasn’t dumb?”
One time last year, I was in a class with a guy, and we were talking to another one of our friends about what we had done over the weekend. He literally looked at me and said, “How do you have time to go out? I haven’t been out to a bar in almost six months, there’s just so much reading to do.” SERIOUSLY?!?! I am not even going to comment on this.

6. My Legal Fiction (Click here for site)
Quick, bite-size chunks of procrastination with a tasty blog center served with joyful moral turpitude—and a straw—from a hater’s point of view, and we like haters.
Favorite post of the week: “Things I’ve learned working at a bar”
What’s a legal blog (other than yours) you can’t get enough of?
Barely Legal (retired), There’s no competition in law school (retired), The Tort of Cockblocking (retired), The War Of All Against All (maybe retired?).
Complete this sentence: In a perfect law school, there would be…
…no law students.
If a gunner came to you ten minutes before a final and gave you a sob story about losing his/her outline, would you show some mercy and give up a copy of yours?
Of course. We are comrades in the war of law school. Besides, gunners save lives. People think that other students are the enemy—they are not. The faculty, administration and our loan officers are.
What’s the dumbest thing you’ve heard in law school?
It’s a tie: (1) “I can’t wait to work at ‘big firm greedy’ because I heard they have secretaries who will bring you lattes whenever you want” or (2) a volunteered response during first-year Contracts that began with, “As an acTOR..... “

7. No. 634 (Click here for site)
Talk about living out loud, after five minutes on Univ. of Minnesota law student Dennis Jansen’s blog about “Law, Life & the Hilarity,” you feel like you know the guy a little too well. But in a good way.
Favorite post of the week: “Dear Mr. Postman”
Complete this sentence: In a perfect law school, there would be…
…copious amounts of free coffee and job offers for all.
Where do you think the No. 1 student in your class will be one year after graduation? Ten years?
U. Minn. keeps the ranks secret, but I suspect one year after graduation that student will skip off to one of the prestigious firms in Minneapolis and make partner in 10 years. (We tend to stay local dontcha kno?)
Where do you think the lowest ranked student in your class will be one year after graduation? Ten years?
One year after graduation the student will work at Starbucks for the health insurance and lack of comparable legal work. This student will eventually find a criminal law position and score an anchor gig on FOX or CNN. Watch out, Nancy!
What’s been your best moment in law school?
Finishing my 1L oral argument. My opposition and I worked hard, did a good job, and I totally went bar hopping in a suit afterwards.
What’s been your worst moment in law school?
Getting shot about a week before 1L spring finals. I missed one day, but made it to the last day of school just in time to watch my face on half of the computer screens in class because someone sent my blog post to Above the Law! That was completely awkward, and I was officially “that guy.” The 1Ls this year randomly approach me and ask, “You’re that guy who got shot aren’t you?!” Now if I can only be law school-famous for something other than catching a stray bullet…
What’s the dumbest thing you’ve heard in law school?
The sound of a fart machine going off in Crim Law because someone had installed it under a gunner’s seat and detonated it during class. Most of us thought it was a cell phone until she bragged about it on Facebook.

8. Thanks, But No Thanks (Click here for site)
Since we have mommy issues, “Nobody” is almost the law school blog parental unit who takes on the nurturing role of educating the masses and rounding up the drivel from around the legal blogosphere.
Favorite post of the week: “In Which Being A Gunner Doesn’t Pay Off”
What’s a legal blog (other than yours) you can’t get enough of?
Though it is sadly defunct, Three Years of Hell to Become the Devil was an outstanding blog. I think Dennis Jansen over at No. 634 adds a lot of value and guidance to the law-student blogging universe, but for sheer humor and “I would like to grow up to be you, please” status, I love The Namby Pamby, Attorney-at-Law.
What’s been your best moment in law school?
The first day of 3L year. By that time, law school is old and familiar, like a favorite pair of sweatpants. The scary bits have more or less worn off, and starting school again means meeting up with old friends, rediscovering bar review, and (as a 3L) the promise that they will “bore you to death” this year. It turns out that old truism is totally bogus, but it is nice to come back and revel in being a student/person who can take naps at 2 o’clock for one more year. I hear that the real world frowns on naps.
What’s been your worst moment in law school?
Coming home after my finals 1L fall semester, I was both violently ill and so exhausted that I forgot to pack pants. It made Christmas break a little awkward. Most of 1L was rough, come to think of it.
If a gunner came to you ten minutes before a final and gave you a sob story about losing his/her outline, would you show some mercy and give up a copy of yours?
Yes. But I would make them dance like a monkey for it first. You get what you pay for, and frankly, my outlines sometimes look like they were put together by monkeys, so....
What’s the dumbest thing you’ve heard in law school?
First day of law school: “To be successful, you must take law school seriously.”
Please. To still be sane at graduation, you must not take law school too seriously. Stop right now, pick up your sense of humor and a chill pill, and then resume your Con Law reading. Do the work, come to class, etc., etc. Then remember that Law School is the worst frenemy you’ve ever had. Law school will make you feel stupid and inferior. It will ruin your eating habits and cause you to think that really lame legal puns are funny. Law school will never give you a straight answer on anything, ever (the answer is always “it depends"), and it will keep you up many, many hapless nights wondering if maybe you’re not just a little bit crazy. Take it too seriously or too personally, and you might start to conflate your own self worth with your ability to analyze Pennoyer—and friends, the real world has no respect for your thoughts on Pennoyer.

9. Virgin In The Volcano (Click here for site)
“Good lord. A pack of cigs and a pregnancy scare and this could be high school.” That says it all about this 3L chick who’s life is sucking big time in the law school inferno—and we love watching her burn.
Favorite post of the week: “Mom Hates Law School Too”
What’s a legal blog (other than yours) you can’t get enough of?
What’s been your best moment in law school?
A school-sponsored scotch tasting.
What’s been your worst moment in law school?
All of the moments before and after the scotch tasting.
If a gunner came to you ten minutes before a final and gave you a sob story about losing his/her outline, would you show some mercy and give up a copy of yours?
Sure. Giving him my outline would be the surest way to tank him.

And finally, our favorite pre-law blog:
10. Legally Questionable Content (Click here for site)
Trying to get out ahead of the whole law-school-soul-corruption issue, we appreciate the pre-gunning of “Ricky Nelson,” just another Jewish white male with big 1L dreams.
Favorite post of the week: “LSAT Love”
What’s a legal blog (other than yours) you can’t get enough of?
The best 1L student blogs are i don’t wear skinny jeans and Moonshine Project. 2L and 3L blogs I’ve enjoyed reading are Teasingly Diverse, No. 634, and Thanks, But No Thanks.
Complete this sentence: In a perfect law school, there would be…
…a beer/liquor vending machine in the library. I mean, Europeans are all about these machines, so I’m sure it could help with the study abroad/exchange gimmicks law schools are starting up. Most importantly, when someone sees me in a library cubicle, alone with no books and a fifth of Jack, I can slur, “I just got here; someone must have left the fifth here.” That line doesn’t quite work as well without the vending machine.
What’s been your worst pre-law school moment?
The application process. From what I can tell, there are two ways of getting into law school: Getting a good LSAT score and affirmative action. I’m not that big on standardized tests, so I’m going the affirmative action route. Thankfully, I’m part of a group that is the most under-represented minority in law school: I am ridiculously good-looking. My application strategy is to send complete-access photos of myself to T14 schools with promises to sleep with as many future coworkers as possible. The school in return will get a bump in their reputation rating in the USNWR rankings, which is something Chicago definitely needs after its embarrassing tie with Berkley this year.
However, I sent the photos a while ago and haven’t heard back, so perhaps I’m not as good-looking as I thought. But that’s no big deal. I also happen to be ridiculously smart, so this LSAT thingy should be a piece of cake.
